While competing at the National Level in Track and Field for over 6 years, I developed a true interest and passion for fitness and achieving health through diet and lifestyle. For years I trained hard in hopes to score a university scholarship and leave my small city to compete at an international level. Unfortunately, unforeseen issues arose with the team I trained with and the coaching we required was no longer available. My world was shattered. All I knew how to be was an athlete. It felt like the biggest piece of my identity had been ripped away. So I dealt with it the only way I knew how at the time; I distracted myself. These distractions included training two times a day to remain in peak athletic condition and experimenting with different diets (often the wrong ones) that I believed would keep me feeling like I was accomplishing something. This resulted in a gradual decline in body fat, muscle wasting and greatly impeded my performance. What the hell? I followed the guidelines that some diet gurus prescribed and ended up becoming some crazy obsessive maniac. After counselling to help me discover my true identity, values and beliefs, I was able to discover my passion for helping others feel their best. How is this achieved? Through better diet and lifestyle practices. After completing my university degree, I have spent 4 years working as a Registered Nurse and have worked with many different medications and observed their effects. This career has haven me the gift of perspective and this blog allows me to share all my passions past and present via a far-reaching medium. I’ve been on the frontline of western healthcare and believe that it often acts as a momentary ‘band-aid’ for deeper issues. Hospitals are great for when you’ve been in an accident, are having a heart attack or cut yourself when chopping vegetables, but when it comes to preventing illness, our diet and lifestyle choices are the key. I used to think that what I ate was sufficiently “healthy”; however looking back, I wish I knew then what I know now.  When it came to fitness, I used to think that more equals better and again, I was wrong.  Do I know everything? Nope. Will the things that worked for me, do the same for everyone? Maybe not. But, the information that I will bring to you is largely based in research and has been explored by others, including myself, with positive outcomes. I am not a guru, and most “diet experts” are not guru’s for you. YOU are your best Guru. The body is an amazing organism, which can manufacture just about everything it needs to be strong and healthy, as long as the resources to do so are present when needed.
